Yan Duyvendak

Game Over

Switzerland | 2004 | 5' 54'' | color | stereo

Face without expression, mechanical gestures, pointless moving around – Yan Duyvendak embodies a character from a video game. A hybrid figure, at the frontier between real and virtual, he moves through the corridors of a fallout shelter, attempting to open unopenable doors, gathering nonexistent arms, taking aim at a foe who can’t even be guessed at. If this Sisyphus, lost in the icy solitude of an endless labyrinth, questions to the point of nausea the models on which he is based, he also brings us back to the solitude and absurdity of our own existences. Sound: Bruno Fleutelot Coproduction: Centre pour l’Image Contemporaine (sgg*) saint-gervais genève Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain d’Alsace, Selestat Fonds cantonal d’art contemporain, Genève namics, Sankt-Gallen (art’s price for new media). Installation version: loop, 8’45’’ to be shown on flat LCD-monitor
